Aurora Public Schools has joined forces with the Colorado Center for Health and Wellness to help combat a problem among Aurora’s youth: childhood obesity.
In a recent ceremony hosted at the Anschutz Medical Campus, APS Superintendent John L. Barry helped launch “5th Gear Kids,” a program designed to reverse childhood obesity. “5th Gear Kids” focuses on developing fifth graders as leaders who make good choices and set good examples for the younger children in their school and their families at home. The program is designed to teach kids life-long skills about nutrition and physical activity.
As part of the rollout, students submitted creative logo designs. Kenton Elementary School student Rosa Saenz Moreno won the contest. Moreno’s design was combined with another design to create the official new logo, which was unveiled at the ceremony. Giovanny Saenz of Montview Math and Health Sciences Elementary and Zoe Major of Aurora Quest K-8 were also recognized for their creativity.
“5th Gear Kids” will reach nearly 7,000 students during the 2012-13 school year.
