NEWS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 9, 2015

WHAT: Veterans Day Ceremony
WHEN: November 11, 2015 at 11 a.m.
WHERE: Aurora Quest K-8, 17315 E 2nd Ave., Aurora, CO 80011

APS Students Honor Veterans and Salute America

Aurora Public Schools students are honoring veterans and participating in “Saluting America” activities. The Veterans Day ceremony at Aurora Quest K-8 will feature an honor guard from Buckley Air Force Base, the Pledge of Allegiance and many veterans from the community.

The ceremony will start promptly at 11:11 a.m. and last for 11 minutes. Students will be wearing red, white or blue according to their grade level. The assembly will also include a performance by the Quest A Band playing the Star Spangled Banner. The Buckley AFB honor guard will lower flags to half-staff while a trumpeter plays Taps. At the end of the song, flags are raised back to the top, and students file silently back into classes.

“The ceremony itself is very moving,” said Trish Guerrero, an Aurora Quest parent and organizer. “The goal is to give everyone, the kids especially, an opportunity to realize how special our military is and how blessed they are to be Americans.”

Other schools will also be hosting assemblies and breakfasts to honor those who have and currently serve our country. APS students and staff are participating in the Saluting America program, which includes writing special thank you cards to veterans. Each “Tribute Card” contains a patriotic image and quote from a noted American. The cards are distributed to kindergarten through high school students and staff members who write personal “thank you” messages in them. Students and staff then personally deliver cards to veterans and active military service members.

CH Montview Saluting America (36)Veterans Day celebrations were in full force across Aurora Public Schools as students and staff honored veteran and active U.S. Military personnel for their service, heroism and sacrifice. Students embraced the spirit of patriotism and expressed their gratitude during various “Saluting America” activities.

Montview Elementary School welcomed veterans to a hearty breakfast while students serenaded them with patriotic songs, poems and presentations. Afterward, veterans read books to students and toured the school to view the children’s Veterans Day art.

Veterans from throughout the Aurora community gathered at Aurora Quest K-8 to be honored in a special ceremony that started promptly at 11:11 a.m. Students wore red, white or blue according to their grade level. The assembly also included a performance by the Quest A Band playing the Star Spangled Banner. The Buckley AFB honor guard presented flags while a trumpeter played Taps. APS Calendars

In October, APS convened a calendar committee to develop options for the 2016-17 Conventional School Calendar. The committee is recommending a draft calendar that is very similar to the one we are currently using, with the following school start and end dates and breaks:

  • July 29 – New teachers report to buildings
  • Aug. 3 – All teachers report to buildings
  • Aug. 8 – First day of school, Grades 6-12
  • Aug. 10 – First day of school, Grades 1-5
  • Aug. 15 – First day of school, Preschool and Kindergarten
  • Oct. 10-14 – Fall recess
  • Dec. 19 – Jan. 2 – Winter recess
  • Jan. 3 – No classes for Grades P-5
  • March 27 - 31 – Spring recess
  • May 25 – Last day of school

The committee is recommending this approach because the calendar worked well for APS staff and families this year and a similar calendar would provide a smooth transition into the next school year. Furthermore, due to enrollment and capacity challenges at several of our schools, the recommendation would allow APS to focus on developing calendar options for 2017-18. This will include a four-track, year-round calendar possibility for overcrowded schools.

The APS Board of Education will consider the calendar recommendations at its Jan. 5 meeting and will likely make a decision on Jan. 19.

2017-18 Calendar

As a reminder, we will convene a 2017-18 Calendar Committee in January 2016 to develop both conventional and four-track, year-round calendar options and evaluate the logistical aspects of implementing a year-round calendar. The Board has directed staff to develop the year-round calendar option as a possible solution to enrollment and capacity challenges at P-8/K-8 schools east of Buckley Road. The year-round calendar would potentially begin in July 2017 at the following schools: Aurora Frontier P-8, Aurora Quest K-8, Clyde Miller P-8, Mosley P-8, Murphy Creek P-8 and Vista PEAK P-8.

The 2017-18 Calendar Committee will be comprised of staff and parents from schools that have been identified as potential candidates for the year-round calendar (listed above), key department and division staff members, and community members. We will be recruiting committee members in the coming weeks.

Read in English.

“If you’d never been born, well then what would you be? You might be a fish! Or a toad in a tree! …Or worse than all that, you might be a Wasn’t! A Wasn’t has no fun at all. No, he doesn’t.” – Dr. Seuss “Happy Birthday to You”

March 2 was Dr. Seuss’s birthday, a national observance known as Read Across America Day. Aurora Public Schools students honored the author’s life, legacy and love for writing by feasting on green eggs and ham, reading his poetic tales, decorating their schools and more.

APS thanks City of Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan for his time with students at Aurora Quest K-8, Aurora Fire Department Chief Mike Garcia for stopping by APS Early Beginnings to read to students, Aurora Public Library staff for reading to students at Aurora Frontier P-8 and every staff member, parent and community member who celebrated this fun-filled day with students. This exemplifies the APS 2020 Strategic Plan core belief that students, families, staff and community members share the responsibility for student achievement.

Happy birthday, Dr. Seuss!

Student achievement and growth are driven by a highly-effective and respected staff working as a team. This notion, an APS 2020: Shaping the Future strategic plan core belief, has recently been personified by Aurora Quest K-8 Dean of Students and Athletic Director Casey Powell.

Powell earned the inaugural 2016 Middle School Athletic Director of the Year award, presented by the Colorado Athletic Directors Association (CADA). The prestigious award honors Powell for his outstanding contributions to Colorado athletics. CADA, a statewide professional organization, supports educational athletics administrators through professional development and positive image promotion.

“I am honored to be recognized for a position I truly love to do,” said Powell. “I get to work with students every day and change their lives.”

Congratulations, Casey! APS is proud to have a dedicated member like you on our team.

Aurora Public Schools invites your input as we work to anticipate the need for possible changes to school calendars and school facility needs for the next several years. The Board of Education began an extensive process in 2014 to identify various options to address school crowding.   From this process, two top options emerged: 1) hold a possible bond election to fund new schools and 2) consider a possible return to a Year-round school calendar at some of our schools. As part of this work, a BOE- sanctioned Year-round Concept Committee, comprised of APS staff and parents, is currently evaluating the logistical aspects of implementing a contingency year-round calendar and reporting this information to the Board.  A second committee is developing both the district school year calendar for the 2017-18 school year, and as a contingency plan, a potential four-track, year-round calendar at some P-8 and K-8 schools.

Which schools may be involved?
If this contingency was needed, the year-round calendar could potentially begin in July 2017 at the following schools: Aurora Frontier P-8, Aurora Quest K-8, Clyde Miller P-8, Edna & John W. Mosley P-8, Murphy Creek P-8 and Vista PEAK Exploratory P-8.

Committee Process Timeline
The following is a timeline of the committee process and Board of Education consideration:

  • Jan.-April 2016: The committees will develop calendar options and a year-round concept plan, gather community feedback and share recommendations with the APS Leadership Team.
  • May 2016: The Board will consider calendar options and information, including the year-round calendar contingency.
  • June-Aug. 2016: The Board will consider options to address APS facility needs, including possible authorization of a bond election.
  • Dec. 2016: APS will present the 2017-18 District School Year and Year-round Calendar options to the Board for a decision.

Aurora Public Schools middle school female students recently got a dose of empowerment and comradery at the district’s sixth annual Girls Technology Camp. The event encouraged the girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

According to a recent report from the Census Bureau, only about a quarter of STEM professionals are women. APS is committed to changing this statistic, starting with the day-long camp.

After APS Natural & Renewable Resources Coordinator Julie North shared her inspiring path to success, students enjoyed hands-on learning with various technology tools. The girls practiced coding with robots and gaming, assembled circuits, took apart and reconstructed netbooks, designed and built houses via Minecraft and more.

The APS Girls Technology Camp supports the APS 2020: Shaping the Future strategic plan by helping students learn skills to implement their plans. It also provides students an opportunity to earn credentials that open doors. Students walked away with digital badges and a new-found enthusiasm for the future.

Game 24 Tournament

At the APS Professional Learning & Conference Center, students from across APS recently showed off their math skills in the annual Game 24 Tournament. More than 50 students in grades 6-8 from 10 middle schools and P/K-8 schools participated in this year's tournament. Nearly 60 students from 15 elementary and P/K-8 schools also participated in a separate tournament.

In groups of four, students examined cards that included four numbers and calculated equations in any combination that equaled 24 using only addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. Whoever points to the card first has to explain their calculations out loud, and if they are correct, adds that card to their total score.

In the middle grades tournament, Aurora Quest's David Berg and Zak Nfaoui, and Columbia's Devin Philio and Autumn Kelly took top honors after the challenge round. The four students received certificates and trophies as middle school tournament winners. The overall winner David Berg earned a graphing calculator for his top place finish.

In the elementary grades tournament, Sixth Avenue's Jesse Frimpong, Vista PEAK Exploratory's Ashley Blake, and Mimi Rai and Hannah Butterworth of Aurora Quest took top honors, earning certificates and trophies. The overall winner Jesse Frimpong also earned math/puzzle tabletop games.

All competitors in both tournaments also earned medals and certificates for their excellent performances.

Congratulations to all the students who matched mathematical wits with each other in this year's Game 24 Tournament!

Kudos to the Aurora Public Schools students and staff who participated in the American Heart Association's Jump Rope/Hoops For Heart & Donate To Play Tournaments. By taking part in the heart healthy school program, APS helped spread the important heart healthy message all year long.

In addition, students and staff raised more than $23,000 to support the American Heart Association.  APS also earned $1,000 in US Games certificates to buy new physical education equipment for schools!  And starting in the 2016-17 school year, school event coordinators will earn eight professional development hours for completing an AHA event.

Congratulations to students and staff at the following schools:

Lyn Knoll Student Puts the “A” in Attendance

There are nearly 200 days in a school year and Lyn Knoll Elementary student Andraine Sinaga has never missed any… for the past five years!

The studious 11-year-old has never reported tardy or absent since she enrolled at the school in first grade. Lyn Knoll Principal Andrea Tucker recently honored Sinaga with a plaque during a special assembly celebrating the student’s remarkable dedication to education. The school also devoted a plaque to highlight students who accomplish the same goal in future years.

Sinaga looks forward to a new chapter of life in the 2016-17 school year as a sixth grade student at Aurora Quest K-8 (a magnet school for gifted and high-achieving students). She hopes to continue this amazing streak throughout her middle and high school careers.

Lyn Knoll also recognized students who have never been tardy or absent the entire school year. Bravo to the students below for a job well done!

- Audrey Castrejon, First grade
- Randy Cespedes, First grade
- Mark Hernandez, Fourth grade
- James Prosky, First grade

Aurora Public Schools applauds students across the district who have demonstrated the same level of commitment to education. We are impressed and encourage the students to continue leading by example.

APS has opened the North Salida Way road extension on the APS Community Campus. The road extension connects the campus to Sixth Avenue and will improve access to Aurora Quest K-8, Edna & John W. Mosley P-8 and APS support facilities in the area. The road is configured for a right turn only onto Sixth Avenue (eastbound).

APS expects the road extension to ease traffic flow on the campus, which was previously accessible only via 2nd Avenue or Centretech Parkway east of Airport Boulevard.

Aurora Quest Stuffed Animal DonationThe Aurora Police Department recently became the recipient of heartfelt generosity from Aurora Quest K-8's National Junior Honor Society Club.

Throughout the 2015-16 school year, NJHS students organized two fundraising events: a chocolate rose sale for Quest students and families and an elementary school dance for kindergarten through third-grade students. Students decided to use the proceeds to purchase nearly 200 stuffed animals to give to the city's Victim Services Unit, which helps support people who have been victims of domestic violence or other traumatic events. Many officers will keep the toys in their patrol cars to give to children and/or adults when responding to calls of this nature.

In addition to their desire to help, the students partnered with the Victim Services Unit to help expand their awareness of the programs available through the APD.

Quest's NJHS has set a remarkable example for future club members on how to engage with the community and provide a service that is second to none.
